Awesome drive – amazing bang for the buck!,
I do not know why this product rates so low (but it is only two ratings for what that’s worth). I have been waiting to upgrade an aging Dell Dimension desktop machine (circa 2006), and over the past few months upgraded the processor (nice boost there), larger hard drives (1T but only 5400 rpm), memory (3Gb). Windows 7 (installed about 18 months ago) was a big step up in speed (and the faster processor really helped), but going from a 1Tb, 5400rpm system drive to this SSD has been nothing short of awesome.
SSD drives started at $5-6 per Gb, now for less than $2/Gb (and with a rebate – now expired but keep your eye out for another one – close to $1/Gb) this 96Gb unit fits the bill nicely. Plenty of room for the Win7 OS and all the program files I currently have (my current system measures something like 60Gb) in addition to future programs, and wicked-fast speeds.
This has been – hands-down – the best improvement / upgrade my system has seen. Of course these units will continue to drift down in price, and according to all the reviews there are faster units out there, but for the ‘bang for the buck’ factor you can’t go wrong.
With an older motherboard (as I mentioned 2006) there was no provision for ACHI mode in the BIOS, so I’ll have to dig around to figure out whether the TRIM function can be enabled through Win7. (MS Knowledge Base 922976 apparently will enable this SATA driver, but I have yet to see that error message indicated).
The instructions that came with the system was surprisingly short (hardly any use to it) but I just plugged it in, entered the BIOS and saw that the drive was immediately recognized. (Make sure to unplug your existing boot drive for installation of Windows to the SSD.) Pop in your Win7 install disk to the optical drive, set the optical drive to boot first in the boot order, and away you go. (Note: be sure to partition using Windows 7 using the ‘New’ button when you see the list of disks come up on where to install Windows to, it will create a Win7 partition (100Mb) to reserve for system use and then the remainder (on the order of 89Gb) for the install.)
If you are on the fence about upgrading older systems, it is amazing how much a difference an SSD makes. I shut down my computer much more often knowing that booting up only is a 10 second operation, and starting programs is also amazingly quick. You won’t regret it!

|Game changer for a mac mini,
I just got 2 of these when they went on sale and they were worth it for what I paid which was close to $1/GB.
I own one of the older 64GB Kingston SSD and it’s barely large enough to hold Windows 7, with office, etc thus one of the reason’s I had to replace the current SSD on my Windows machine which is already full.
The second SSD was for my Mac mini. Now the performance improvement there was astonishing since I can actually code and use programs without having to wait forever to open them. Safari for example used to take around 5 bounces to open but now opens instantly under 1 bounce in the dock! Even garageband which used to take the longest to open at around 15 bounces only takes around 5 now. It’s like getting and entirely different machine on the Mac and is definitely worth it for that. And anyone knows that’s used a Mac already know how fast they boot but under 10 seconds is ridiculous. I had to do a double take and actually watch my mac mini reboot since it was so fast I thought it never did a complete reboot in first place but it did!

On a Windows machine if you already own a raptor or other 10,000 rpm drive like I used to before getting an SSD it’s not that impressive of an upgrade. Window Experience Index is a 6.9 for this drive. HDTune gives around 211 MB/sec average transfer rate with 106MB/sec minimum and 224MB/sec maximum as you can see in the screenshots I took.
Yeah it boots up fast but if you are already using hibernation it’s not a game changer and actually if you are used to the larger raptors it’s actually annoying since you have to keep an eye on running low on disk space. With most programs you won’t notice the difference in opening times of different applications like on the mac.
So in the end I’d give it 5 stars if you are using a mac and this drive is an excellent choice for macs since no TRIM necessary since the drive does it’s own garbage collection.
For a windows machine I’d only give it a 4 mainly because compared to the prior larger almost as fast raptor it feels like I’m downgrading since I can’t install as many programs, I find myself running out of space and speedup not that impressive compared to my mac mini. Then again maybe it just runs faster on Unix than Windows if you believe the numbers the Ubuntu benchmark tool gives which is 250MB/sec which is significantly faster than what I got in Windows!

I just installed this in a 6 year old Dell Dimension 3000 desktop to replace it’s original 80GB drive and another 40GB drive (not full) that was at least twice as old. Both old drives had been spinning pretty much continuously since 2005 and still working fine, but I was starting to worry. Cloned my 80GB to this SSD using Clonezilla, added extended FAT32, Linux EXT3, and Linux swap partitions at the end and copied those off the 40GB drive. Now both old drives are out of the box and this little SSD is stuck in there (with velcro) using a Kingwin ADP-06 EIDE-to-SATA adapter. The only moving parts left are the fans and the CD drive!
Boots to WinXP desktop with Skype etc. up and running about 3 times faster. Everything loads very quickly (quiet and cool too.) A McAfee Virus Scan seems to run a lot faster. The only downside is that the Kingwin adapter’s activity led (and thus the activity led on the front of the Dell) doesn’t blink when this drive is accessed. So I added a little tray applet to take the place of the activity led.
